Mac OS 8.2d8 (Code name: Snowman) The beta version of Mac OS 8.2 was like many others, an attempt to incorporate more of Copland's features one at a time, rather than doing an all-out redesign of Mac OS - something they were having a lot of difficulty doing. One of the features added in this release was Themes. Themes allow you to change system colours and even the shapes of windows and menus. Mac OS 8.2 included semi-working theme support and three themes Apple Platinum, Gizmo, and Hi-Tech. As you can see in the screenshots, Apple Platinum was the normal Mac OS 8.x look and feel. The other two themes are radically different.
Mac OS 8.2 beta incorporates some elements of the final version of Mac OS 8.5, such as the resizable application menu, and parts of the final version of Mac OS 9.x, such as Keychain. Overall this beta is quite buggy, even booting causes it to drop into the debugger with an error, and there are lots of screen redrawing problems. All problems set aside, this is a very interesting beta because Mac OS 8.2 never was released (it's widely held that Mac OS 8.2 was the beta version and it became 8.5 when released), and Themes are really fun to play with. Full Theme support was added to the final version of 8.5. Pretty standard 'About This Mac' box. Note the special menu. This is a common practice with Apple, changing the name of the special menu lets them know instantly what version they\'re looking at. The button in the lower-left doesn't seem to do anything. The two blank colour setting menus have no items. What\'s with the icon below 'password'? Also note that this version has Keychain which wasn't added until the retail version of Mac OS 9. It shows time.apple.com as 'apple internal' not 'apple americas/U.S' like in the final version of the control panel. I love the Acme Corp examples. This is another example of the Control Strip not being drawn correctly. Network Setup crashes when opened. Look at the memory control panel icon. Also, it rarely drew the Control Strip correctly. This is similar to the Networking Control Panel in later versions of Mac OS X, in the sense AppleTalk, TCP/IP, and dial-up settings are all incorporated into one Control Panel. The note at the bottom of the window reads: 'Your father wanted you to have this, when you were old enough.' Both this picture and the next two are from another website. Larger images are not available. Another picture showing the other tabs in the Network Setup Control Panel. The note at the bottom of the window reads: 'That's no moon -- that's a space station!' It's a line from Star Wars. But you knew that, right? Nothing too interesting here. Themes are stored in the Themes folder located at the root of the System Folder.
