Mac OS 10.4 Tiger WWDC Preview (Build 8A162) Mac OS 10.4 Tiger WWCD Preview (build 8A162) was our first glimpse at Tiger outside Steve Jobs' demonstration. It was widely accepted that the version he was using was newer than this build but it was quite complete for a first build. Only a few things were "not complete". Tiger did evolve before it was finally released but quite a bit was already here.
One thing that seemed to change with each build was the Spotlight menu design. This is the original method for loading Dashboard Widgets (although at this point they were still using the code name Gadgets). Gone are the shortcut placements at the top of the System Preferences window. Replacing them is a Spotlight search field. When running a search the most relevant choice is highlighted with less relevant hits having a dimmer glow. Another new feature of Tiger is Setup Assistant which allows you to transfer files from another Mac via Firewire or from another drive. An enhanced Universal Access preferences allows for much more control over which voices are used for feedback. Tiger's QuickTime now allows for enhanced control over it's plugin and streaming disk and bandwidth usage. Although I personally don't think Macs need this much security at this time, the option has been added to allow those who are paranoid to protect themselves. A cleaner interface for adding and removing printers, faxes and sharing them was part of the first released (to developers anyway) build of Mac OS 10.4 Tiger. This message is displayed when attempting to bring up the printer options using the button seen here. Note the message at the bottom of the list. Seems Apple was still working on printer sharing at the time of this build. Now web documents can be stored in a single file or as a folder with all the individual components intact. Included in Safari 2.0 is the ability to send the contents of a page or a link to the page using Apple Mail. This Sync menu was added so people could easily access Sync Manager's basic functions without running the program. Pipeline was included inside the AppleScript folder, possibly because the two are so similar. Also, AppleScript Utility is missing its custom icon. One addition to Mail is a connection troubleshooting ability. From what I'm told it wasn't very useful (and still isn't in the final version). .Mac coupled with the new Sync Manager could be a very powerful tool. Although I think .Mac should be free. Sharing using a domain name is available should you want people to have access to your .Mac services. Please link to pages, not directly to images. All screenshots are submitted to this site.
