Copland (Build d11e4) (Code name: Spaz)

Copland was to be Apple's answer to all the newer generation operating systems which had protected memory (which prevents one program from crashing your computer), real multitasking and smarter virtual memory. It was to be released as Mac OS 8.0, however the version of Mac OS 8.0 which was released has little in common with Copland which was basically being made from scratch.

Copland was scrapped when it became appearent that the project was in a death spiral (technical term).

What? No About This Macintosh picture? Normally I ask that all submitted screenshots include an About This Macintosh photo, however, in this Developer Release there isn't even a menu item for that!
Copland Build d11e4
Many items in Copland's Mac OS Folder (notice it isn't called 'System Folder') are ones you won't see anywhere else. Personally, I really like the icons. By the way, the test system crashed after each screenshot was taken - forcing a reboot every time.
Copland Build d11e4
Mac OS Folder is Copland, while System Folder is the System 7.5 install. Copland also makes some log files while doing its thing, as you can see in the photo.
Copland Build d11e4
The application menu is very strange.
Copland Build d11e4
'Disconnect' must be for mounted servers, however, because this version doesn't have AppleShare, this could not be tested.
Copland Build d11e4
AppleTalk setup is simple enough.
Copland Build d11e4
This release has AppleTalk, but no AppleShare. Go figure.
Copland Build d11e4
Finder Preferences is similar to General Controls. However, like recent Mac OS versions, it is accessible from a menu in the Finder.
Copland Build d11e4
Spring-Loaded folders. Plus an option to hide the Mac OS folder from novice users.
Copland Build d11e4
Nothing special in here.
Copland Build d11e4
Relative dates didn't make their way into Mac OS until the general release of Mac OS 8.
Copland Build d11e4
Interesting note when loading Drive Setup.
Copland Build d11e4
This is as close as you can get to something working in this build.

We do not have any copies of these operating systems. Nor do we know where to find them.
